GF82.85-P-2007SKJ Telephone Mode, Function
- with CODE (498) Japan version

The Personal Digital Cellular (PDC) mobile telephone standard is used for vehicles sold on the Japanese market. A (PDC) portable CTEL bracket is installed in the driver information system of the vehicle. In order to use the cellular telephone function, the user must insert a portable CTEL (A34/6) that is compatible with the Japanese (PDC) cellular telephone system into the (PDC) portable CTEL bracket. The portable CTEL (A34/6) is connected to a standard connection for PDC cellular phones and is thus connected directly to the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). A serial data line is used to exchange control and data signals between the portable CTEL (A34/6) and the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). The portable CTEL bracket (PDC) is installed in the telephone compartment of the center console below the armrest. The portable CTEL (A34/6) must be inserted in the portable CTEL bracket (PDC) before the user can make or receive a telephone call.

Telephone numbers can be displayed and selected using the portable CTEL (A34/6) or the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3), which also stores the phone directories and all service and e-mail data.
As well as the telephone functions, the "Internet" (with e-mail), "24- hour service" and "i-mode" (optional) functions are available. The "i- mode" function is mobile Internet technology. The functions are displayed in the upper multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1), on the display of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) and on the portable CTEL display (A34/6).

It is not possible to talk in private mode when the portable CTEL (A34/6) is in its bracket. The Internet function and service functions are only available when the vehicle is stationary and the parking brake is applied.

The following telephone functions are possible with the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3):
^ Switch the portable CTEL (A34/6) on and off with the permanently assigned button (HARDKEY TEL) on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).
^ Phone book management
^ The phone directory of the portable CTEL (A34/6) can be downloaded onto the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). Existing entries can be deleted and new entries can be added using the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3)

Making a call using numbers in memory:
^ Personal numbers, mailbox, selected call numbers, answered calls, unanswered calls

Internet function
The user has Internet access via the portable CTEL (A34/6). A prerequisite for this is an Internet-capable PDC cellular phone. In order to use the "i-mode" function that is widespread throughout Japan, the portable CTEL (A34/6) must also support the data transfer protocol for the "i-mode" system. The Internet functionalities (operation, management, display, etc.) run on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).
Internet functions:
^ Next or previous page (scrolling)
^ STOP download
^ Reload start page
^ Switch to start page
^ Add Web address to Favorites list (bookmark)
^ Zoom (in, out)
^ Terminate connection
^ Log onto the internet
^ Data coding

E-mail function
The user can send and receive e-mails via the inserted portable CTEL (A34/6) and data set up by the service provider. The user can operate the system using the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).
E-mail functions:
^ Receive e-mails, edit e-mails, send e-mails
^ Received e-mails can be saved, forwarded and answered
^ New e-mails can be written and sent or stored as a draft
^ Listing of all e-mails received sorted by date received
^ Different presentation in the display for read, unread and protected e-mails
^ Received e-mails can be deleted automatically and manually; saved e-mails can only be deleted manually
^ The maximum e-mail length is < 600 bytes; a maximum of 50 e-mails can be saved
^ 20 predefined sets
^ An e-mail can be sent directly or as a copy (CC)
^ E-mail addresses can be entered using the entry aid (speller) or automatically from the address book

Voice operation using the Voice Control System (VCS)
The voice control system is intended to assist the driver during a journey by giving him/her access to a series of functions, without diverting his/her attention from the road, and providing an intuitive control system. The voice control system is controlled using the software integrated in the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).
The user can activate the voice control using the VCS switch (S93/2). A signal that is generated in the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3), is heard when the voice control system is operational. The user can then communicate with the "VCS" system, which currently only supports the Japanese language.

The following components can be controlled via the "VCS" system:
^ Telephone components
^ Audio and video components
^ Navigation components
^ Help function (with commands displayed on the display of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3)).

On Japanese cellular telephones, the number, name and a phonetic spelling of the name are stored in the phone directory. If the phone directory is transferred to the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3), all the directory entries are available immediately, also for the voice control system.

If problems occur with the command input by the user, the system responds with an appropriate command. This command is generated in the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) and output via the audio gateway control unit (N93/1) and vehicle speakers.
