Component Identification:

The UPCI (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) control unit (N123/1) allows a portable CTEL (A34/6) (currently Motorola only) to be used in the vehicle. The system installed in the vehicle can communicate with different portable CTEL models (A34/6). It is simply a matter of attaching the UPCI (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) (A34/15) for the relevant CTEL (A34/6) to the UPCI contact plate.

Telephone operation
The telephone system can be operated as follows:
^ Directly from the portable CTEL (A34/6)
^ Via the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) in combination with the upper multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1)
^ At the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3)

Information can be displayed via the
^ Display of the portable CTEL (A34/6)
^ Display of the instrument cluster (A1)
^ COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3)

As well as the telephone functions the "Internet" (with e-mail) and "SMS" functions are available.
The operating signals are transmitted by the MFL via the Local Interconnect Network (LIN) bus to the steering column module (N80), and from here via the Controller Area Network bus class B (interior) CAN-B to the audio gateway control unit (N93/1). The audio gateway (N93/1) transmits the signals on the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST).
The telephone radio signals are transmitted and received using the rod antenna (A28). These signals are transmitted to the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI) control unit (N123/1) via the left antenna amplifier module (A2/64) and the E-net compensator (A28/3). The E-net compensator (A28/3) compensates for losses caused by the higher transmission frequency of the E-net by means of amplification.

For communication with MOST participants, the portable CTEL (A34/6) requires an interface. This is the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1).

Provided that it is operational, the telephone is illustrated by a symbol on the display of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). The reception field strength of the telephone is also displayed when the user places the telephone in the UHI portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface) (A34/15). All control signals and useful signals (e.g. sound signals with hands- free system activated) are transferred by the MOST. The battery of the portable CTEL (A34/6) is charged via the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1). The battery is charged automatically as soon as the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1) is active, and this irrespective of whether the portable CTEL (A34/6) is switched on or off.

The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) has the following telephone functions:
^ Automatic disabling of telephone card when the personal identification number is entered incorrectly 3 times.
^ Direct dialing of the telephone number via the numerical keypad, display of the name of the person called (if the number entered is known)
^ Speed-dialing of the first 10 memory locations by pressing one key only or dialing all other memory locations by entering the 3-digit memory location number
^ Display of telephone number for incoming call (if telephone number is also transmitted)
^ Display of name if telephone number is known
^ Read text messages
^ Telephone book processing
^ Edit notebook
^ Select from memory list using
- memory location numbers
- Names (alphabetic)
- List of last 10 numbers dialed

Handsfree mode
During a phone call it must be possible for the user to hold the conversation using the hands-free system. The hands-free system microphone (B25) in the overhead control panel control unit (N70) is used for this purpose. From there the microphone signals are relayed directly to the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI) control unit (N123/1), digitized and sent to the audio gateway control unit (N93/1) via the MOST. Here signals are processed and output via the vehicle speakers. Hands-free communication is activated by pressing the relevant button on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).
During a hands-free telephone call the audio source is automatically muted. Operation can take place using the portable CTEL (A34/6), the multifunction steering wheel or the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).

Hands-free operation is only possible if the portable CTEL (A34/6) is inserted in the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI) portable CTEL holder (A34/15).

The volume can be adjusted separately for the telephone mode.

Writing and editing text messages
In the service basic menu, the "Mail" button takes you to the menu for creating, sending or administering text messages (SMS). The following possibilities exist:
^ Call up mail inbox
^ Call up mail outbox
^ Call up mail draft
^ Create new messages
^ Select mail settings

The characters are entered using the portable CTEL (A34/6) entry aid or the keyboard on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) control panel. These functions are also used for sending SMS messages; a receiver can be specified or dialed from the telephone book.

Data safety, SMS memory
If the battery voltage drops below 9.5 V, the characters in the memory of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) are saved. However, it is possible for up to 4 characters to be lost. When switched off in a normal manner, no characters are lost.
