GF82.61-P-0003SK Audio 50 APS, Function
- with CODE (525) MB Audio 50 APS radio

The radio and navigation unit (A2/56) is the central operating unit for the entertainment and communication systems integrated in the vehicle within the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST). It is equipped with a display to output information such as function key assignment, function status and control menus. The following functions can be operated:
^ Radio drive
^ Audio amplifier
^ CD disk drive
^ CC drive
^ Telephone
^ Navigation
^ Audio AUX

Additional audio sources, e.g. an MP3 player, can be integrated into the front entertainment system using the audio AUX function. An AUX jack is located in the glove compartment as a connection facility.

The radio and navigation unit (A2/56) can be operated by 2 main control fields, which are located on the left and right next to the display, as well as a combination push and rotary knob and a cross-shaped rocker button. Some functions can be activated using the left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and the right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111). It should be noted that all pushbutton operations on the multifunction steering wheel are first processed by the instrument cluster (A1). The instrument cluster (A1) links the incoming button actuations with the current menu setting on the upper multifunction display (A1p13) and transmits a corresponding Controller Area Network (data bus/CAN bus) (CAN) message via the audio gateway control unit (N93/1) to the radio and navigation unit (A2/56) if necessary.

Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) data bus system
The digital components of the radio and navigation unit (A2/56) are linked to each other by the Media Oriented Systems Transport (MOST). The databus system is used to transmit data (control commands and useful information) between the various system components. Because some of the individual components work with different data formats or require different data transfer rate and security levels, different data bus systems have been installed:
^ Media Oriented System Transport (MOST)
^ Controller area network bus class B (interior compartment) (CAN B)
^ Controller Area Network bus, class C (engine compartment) (CAN C)
^ Local interconnect network (LIN) bus

The conditions must be met for startup:
^ Circuit 15R ON
^ Voltage supply (on-board power supply 12 V) applied
^ System check (authentication) positive

System activation
If the pushbutton control is pressed the radio and navigation unit (A2/56) switches on. In each case the volume can be regulated with the pushbutton rotary switch for the audio source active. The function keys switch over to the audio source desired by the user. Settings made during navigation voice output apply as the absolute level for the subsequent navigation voice output. Operation of the radio and navigation unit (A2/56) via:
^ permanently programmed function keys
^ Alphanumeric key block
^ Eject button
^ Programmable function keys
^ Combination push and rotary knob with integrated hands-free button
^ Cross-shaped rocker switch with pushbutton
^ ON button
^ Mute button
^ Display
^ Control buttons on multifunction steering wheel

A remote control is not planned.

Interfaces
The data exchange with the instrument cluster (A1) takes place via the Controller Area Network bus class B (interior) (CAN-B). In this way, the instrument cluster (A1) receives, from the radio and navigation unit (A2/56) via the audio gateway control unit (N93/1), the audio and telephone data for the upper multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster (A1) as well as the time via Controller Area Network bus class B (interior) (CAN-B).

The following components are integrated into the radio and navigation module (A2/56):
^ Navigation processor
^ 4-channel amplifier Global position system receiver
^ Processor
^ Set of chips (for voice output)
^ CD disk drive
^ CC drive
^ AUX jack (in glove compartment)
^ Turn rate sensor (gyrosensor) (used for determining changes in direction when driving through curves or vector calculation during navigation)
