The route guidance through voice output function is a comfort function that assists the driver during a journey without diverting his/her attention from the traffic. The destination-oriented navigation of the navigation system is primarily supported by voice outputs with the following information
- Route summary (following route calculation, a route summary is output)
- Warning at freeway approach roads
- Turning recommendations
- Junction names
- Corners
- Railroad crossings

The voice output of the navigation system features the following languages:
- Japanese
- English

The following messages are also issued during route guidance through voice output:
- Destination, intermediate destination or stopover reached
- Influence of route by traffic information
- Start of route calculation

In the following instances a special instruction is issued during voice output:
- Destination in area with restricted traffic access
- Route via ferry
- Route via toll road

Function sequence
The voice data is originally stored on the navigation DVD as individual word segments. This data record is automatically transmitted from the DVD into the navigation processor (with hard disk) of the COMAND controller unit where it is stored. If required, the voice output signals are forwarded over the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the sound system amplifier (N40/3) (with code (810) Sound system):
- Left front door speaker (H4/1)
- Right front door speaker (H4/2)
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill) (H4/27)

On vehicles except code (810) Sound system, the LF signals are amplified in the COMAND controller unit and forwarded over direct lines to the following speakers:
- Left front door speaker
- Right front door speaker
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill)

When voice output is active the announcement volume can be adjusted using the following components:
- With the volume control on the COMAND controller unit
- With the + and -, for setting specific functions and volume control (S111s1) in the right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
