GF82.61-P-4003SKJ Dynamic Route Guidance, Function
- with CODE (498) Japan version

The current traffic situation is taken into consideration in the dynamic route guidance. The navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) receives the traffic information via the Vehicle Information and Communication System (VICS). The antenna signal is passed over a coaxial line via the VICS antenna splitter (A28/10) directly to the internal VICS of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3), where the information contained in it are processed. Then the information is displayed on the map in the display of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).

The VICS 3 media box for dynamic route guidance is a dealer option, but the interface to the connection is already in the vehicle (factory installed).

Without the external VICS 3 media box, the internal VICS is not suitable for dynamic route guidance.

The traffic data recorder decodes and selects the traffic messages relating to the selected stretch and the surrounding area and forwards them to the navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) on request. Notification that the route has been recalculated taking traffic messages into consideration, is provided.

Traffic radio, function
Signs installed next to roads and freeways inform road users of the frequencies on which regional radio stations (with a fixed broadcast frequency) broadcast traffic information.
The driver can press the "Traffic Information" button on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) in different regions to hear the local traffic information.

Traffic information is only broadcast regionally and not nationally. It is therefore difficult to create a complete and up-to-date list of traffic jams. Dynamic route guidance is therefore not always possible.

The traffic information stored in the traffic data recorder is automatically deleted after t = 0.5 hrs. A maximum of 100 messages can be stored.

The navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) decides whether or not the route should be changed. The decision is based above all on the route selection that has been entered.
The traffic data recorder requires an up-to-date "location list" from the navigation processor in order to correct the route. Each stretch of road and each striking feature (e.g. expressway exit) of the road network detected is clearly defined by means of a number. The "location list" is originally stored on the navigation digital versatile disk (DVD).
The decoded traffic messages are marked on the map using suitable symbols. They can also be displayed as clear text. Traffic reports relevant to the route are, for example:
^ Completely blocked
^ Traffic jam
^ Stop and go traffic
^ Construction sites
