General information on navigation
The location of the vehicle, as well as the direction and distance to the destination are determined with the aid of the navigation system after entering the following information:
- Country
- Town name
- Street
- Intersection or house number (depending on availability of the data)
- Town centers
- ZIP code
- Points of interest (POI)

After the destination and street have been entered, the following computer models can be selected:
- Quickest route
- Shortest route
- Dynamic route

In addition, other route options can be selected:
- Avoid freeway
- Avoid toll road
- Avoid roads requiring toll stickers
- Avoid ferries or vehicle shipments
- Avoid tunnels

The "Special Destinations" menu is supplemented by the "Bypassing current location", "Bypassing other Locations" and "National Destinations" submenus. POI categories are, e.g.:
- Junctions
- Highway service
- Airport
- Hotel or motel
- Hospital
- Parking lot
- Restaurant

After entering or calling a destination location, route calculation starts.

Function sequence
The navigation system integrated into the radio and navigation unit (A2/56) uses the data entered to calculate the data required to reach the destination (destination-oriented navigation). Further partial functions are described in separate documents:
^ Position finding and destination-oriented navigation, function
^ Route guidance through voice output, function

The route is calculated in accordance with the options set. If observance of the options is not possible, then the options set are ignored for the sections in question and a message is displayed and signaled audibly. The set options can be displayed and changed at any time. After the calculation, the route is indicated by arrow symbols on the display of the radio and navigation unit and in the instrument cluster (A1).

An acoustic announcement is then made, saying "The route is calculated".
If the vehicle is no longer moving on the pre-calculated route, then the route is recalculated. If the recalculated values are plausible for the navigation system, then the modified route is displayed. An alternative route is offered under dynamic route guidance if there is a traffic jam or a road block on the calculated route.
The system can be activated or deactivated or the destination and street can be entered using the following components:
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
- Control panels on the radio and navigation unit
- VCS [SBS] switch (S93/2) of the voice control system (VCS [SBS]), with code (511) Audio 50 APS with DVD changer

The control signals of the left multifunction steering wheel button group and the right multifunction steering wheel button group are routed to the radio and navigation unit via the following:
- Steering LIN
- Steering column tube module (N80)
- Interior CAN

The control signals of the VCS [SBS] switch, with code (511) Audio 50 APS with DVD changer, are routed to the radio and navigation unit via the following:
- Direct line
- Steering column tube module
- Interior CAN

The control signals are processed within the device for direct entries via the control panels on the radio and navigation unit.
