Function requirements
^ "Circuit 15 ON" status
^ COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) activated via "ON" button
^ "Navi" menu selected
^ No fault on global positioning system (GPS) antenna system
^ Signals available from at least 3 GPS satellites
^ Current navigation data loaded

General
The navigation mode is an assistant function which supports the driver in reaching his/her destination without diverting his/her attention from traffic. This is done by:
- Route planning, route calculation and destination-oriented navigation
- Visual driving instructions in form of pictograms
- Intersection zoo
- Acoustic driving recommendations
- Display of navigation maps

The location of the vehicle and the direction and distance to the destination are determined with the aid of the navigation system.

The navigation system consists of several subfunctions:
^ General navigation mode function sequence
^ Position finding and destination-oriented navigation
^ Route guidance through voice output

Operating instructions
The navigation system can be operated using the following components:
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
- Control buttons on the COMAND controller unit
- Voice control over voice control system (VCS)

General navigation mode function sequence
The navigation processor integrated into the COMAND controller unit calculates the data entered for reaching the destination (destination-oriented navigation). The route is then calculated taking the configured options into consideration. If it should not be possible to adhere to the options, then the configured options are ignored for the stretch in question and a corresponding message is displayed and acoustically sounded. The configured criteria and options can be displayed and changed. Once calculated, the route is displayed using arrow pictograms on the display of the COMAND controller unit, and acoustic notification is also provided: "The route is calculated". If the vehicle is no longer moving on the pre-calculated route, then the route is recalculated. If the recalculated values are plausible for the navigation system, then the modified route is displayed.

The control signals of the left multifunction steering wheel button group and the right multifunction steering wheel button group take the following path:
- Steering LIN
- Steering column tube module (N80)
- Interior CAN
- COMAND controller unit

When directly entered using the control buttons on the COMAND controller unit, the control signals are processed within the COMAND controller unit.
The voice input takes place via the hands-free system microphone group (B25). Words spoken into the handsfree system microphone group are converted into an electrical signal and forwarded via a discrete line to the COMAND controller unit.
