GF82.85-P-2012SKJ Navigation Mode, Function
- with CODE (498) Japan version

The location of the vehicle and the direction and distance from the destination (after entering a destination) are determined by the integral navigation processor with the aid of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). Then the required measures for reaching the destination are started (navigation). The navigation system is activated when the driver door is opened (in the background). This means that it is available immediately after initialization by the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). A Digital Versatile Disk (DVD)-ROM drive is integrated in this for reading the digital map data. When the "NAVI" button is pressed, the "Insert navigation DVD" instruction appears on the navigation screen.

If the wrong DVD-ROM is inserted or the disk cannot be read, an error message is displayed.

Destination entry
Destination entry is menu-assisted via the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) and is processed by the integral navigation processor. The following destination entry facilities are available in navigation mode:
^ Via destination memory
^ Via destination entry
^ Special destinations (e.g. hospital, parking lot, gas station)
^ Last destination input
^ Entry of intermediate destinations
^ Dynamic route calculation
^ Address input
^ Destination with map
^ Travel guide
^ Destination memory with individual destinations

Predictive text input
When entering the destination, the next possible letter is displayed and the relevant letter can then be accepted into the destination entry.

Dynamic supplementation
This function is realized with the manual entry of the destination. While entering a destination the letters which are still missing are completed from an existing list. The supplemented characters have a black background. Deleting can be accomplished character by character. The following submenus are displayed in the "Special destinations" menu:
^ In vicinity of location
^ Surrounding area of actual destination
^ Surrounding area of a specific location center
^ Surroundings of special destinations

These submenus are subdivided still further. The search radius is approx. 20 km, however special categories, e.g. airport, have a larger search radius (approx. 80 km).

Position finding
The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) continuously calculates the location of the vehicle with the aid of the following methods:
^ Basic position finding (dead reckoning)
^ GPS position finding
^ Map-supported map matching

The navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) calculates the most probable position by continuously comparing the results of these 3 position-finding methods.

Route calculation
The route is calculated in the navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) after destination input or automatically after a deviation from the proposed route. In the dynamic navigation system the route calculation is influenced by incorporating traffic information via an external Vehicle Information and Communication System (VICS).

Navigation starts when the navigation data have been stored in the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) and the navigation processor has calculated the route. 3 types of display can be selected for graphic navigation:
^ Map
^ Map and symbol presentation of the turn-off points
^ Symbol presentation (system of navigation symbols)

The map presentation is always controlled by the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). The system supports the following functions:
^ Navigation map
^ Position map
^ Destination map
^ Route map
^ Auto zoom
^ Intersection zoom
^ Traffic jam map
^ Car park map

It is possible to change arbitrarily between the types of presentation. Navigation is assisted considerably in all cases by the Voice Control System (VCS) that is integrated in the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) via the vehicle speakers.

If the DVD-ROM drive is not being used for navigation, audio CDs or video DVDs can be played.
