General
The audio mode consists of the following component functions:

^ Disk and MP3 function sequence
^ Music Register function sequence

Operating instructions
Audio functions can be selected, activated and adjusted with the following components:
- Control buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit
- CCE, Central Control Element (Joystick)

Radio mode function sequence (AM/FM)
The rod antenna (A28) receives high frequency (HF) signals for the radio frequency ranges FM and AM (SW, LW, MW). The following useful signals relevant for the radio reception are modulated onto these HF signals:
- Music signals
- Speech signals
- Data signals (e.g. VICS signals for current traffic information)

These HF signals are routed to the left antenna amplifier module (A2/64) via direct lines. The left antenna amplifier module filters the radio frequency band frequencies from the HF signals received, and amplifies these. The amplified signals are then sent over coaxial lines (FM, AM) to the tuner integrated into the COMAND operating, display and controller unit where they are demodulated.

The demodulated audio signals in vehicles with code (810) Sound system are routed from the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the sound system amplifier (N40/3) where they undergo final amplification. The audio is then output by the following speakers via direct lines:
- Left door speaker group (H4/1)
- Right door speaker group (H4/2)
- Left rear speaker (H4/7)
- Right rear speaker (H4/8)
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill) (H4/27)
- Left door tweeter (H4/33)
- Right door tweeter (H4/34)
- Left rear surround speaker (H4/54)
- Right rear surround speaker (H4/57)

In vehicles except code (810) Sound system, the audio output takes place directly over direct lines via the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and through the following speakers:
- Left door speaker group
- Right door speaker group
- Left rear speaker
- Right rear speaker
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill)
- Left door tweeter
- Right door tweeter

The function sequence for the radio mode also includes the following subfunctions:
^ AM tuner function
^ FM tuner function with phase diversity

AM tuner function
In this radio frequency band, the wanted signals are broadcast by means of amplitude modulation (AM). The AM tuner integrated into the COMAND operating, display and controller unit demodulates these signals. In other words, it separates the useful signals (audible frequencies) from the carrier signal (inaudible).

FM tuner function with phase diversity
In this radio frequency band, the useful signals are broadcast using frequency modulation (FM). The FM tuner integrated into the COMAND operating, display and controller unit demodulates these signals. In other words, they also separate the useful signals (audible frequencies) from the carrier signal (inaudible). The COMAND operating, display and controller unit also switches between the antenna amplifiers, depending on the reception quality. This function runs automatically.

Disk and MP3 function sequence
The COMAND operating, display and controller unit has an integral single DVD player. This DVD player can play the following media and formats:
- Video DVD
- Audio DVD
- DVD-ROM (Audio/video data)
- Audio CD
- CD-ROM (Audio or video data)
- MP3

The user interface for controlling the DVD functions (e.g. track selection) and display of supplemental information (e.g. track) is accomplished on the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

Music Register function sequence
The "Music register" function enables audio CDs to be stored on the hard disk in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. The stored music files can be called up as desired.
