Top coat
Top coat is a further corrosion-protection measure and helps create an attractive, individual look for the vehicle.

The demands on top coats depend greatly on the application purpose and the type of vehicles to be coated. Different top coat qualities are therefore used in painting passenger cars, buses and commercial vehicles.

A paint system to meet the Client demands and demands of use, taking into account economic and ecological aspects, is ensured for series production paintwork in all Mercedes-Benz plants.

The level of quality has been continuously increased due to targeted development and years of collaboration with our paint partners.

For the sake of industrial hygiene and environmental protection, only top coat systems which are solvent-reduced as far as possible and free from heavy metals, are used on our vehicles.

No matter which paints are used at Mercedes-Benz, internal quality regulations ensure the highest demands against chemical and mechanical effects are met, under the most diverse climatic conditions, while ensuring environmental protection.

There are two different types of top coat available:
- Single layer solid top coat
- Two layer paint (solid or metallic) base coat+ clear coat

Specific properties of the top coat are:
- For base coats: coloration and formation of color effect,
- For clear coat and single-layer solid paints: appearance, gloss, spreading characteristics, weathering resistance, light-fastness, resistance to environmental influences, chemical and mechanical effects.
