Disposing of Fuel Tanks







Sheet steel fuel tanks
Before opening, drain fuel tank fully, clean thoroughly and flush with a non-combustible substance, such as water, steam or with an inert gas. e.g.nitrogen, carbondioxide. After this, open fuel tank with a chisel or metal shears approx. 30x30 cm. Dispose of the ventilated fuel tank as metal scrap.

Plastic fuel tanks
Before opening, drain fuel tank fully, clean throughly and flush with a non-combustible substance, such as water, steam or with an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen, carbondioxide. After this, open fuel tank with an appropriate saw approx. 30x30 cm.

In Germany the opened plastic fuel tank can be returned through the Mercedes Recycling System (MeRSy) as "other plastic parts" for recycling.

Workshops which are not linked to MeRSy, can dispose of the plastic fuel tanks, which have been pre-treated as described above, with other commercial waste of a domestic waste nature.

Transport
Old fuel tanks which have been cut open and ventilated are not subject to the provisions of regulations for the transportation of hazardous goods by road.
