Sequence of items 1 and 2

Operating procedure
Point 1
Depending on the severity of the collision, the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) sends an electrical ignition pulse to driver airbag squib 1 (R12/13) and driver airbag squib 2 (R12/14) of the inflator. Ignition can take place simultaneously or delayed, depending on the nature of the accident.

Point 2
The squibs then ignite the solid propellant in the inflator. When the solid fuel burns it generates a gas that flows explosively under high pressure through a filter and into the interior of the airbag folded compactly on top of the inflator.

Sequence of items 3 and 4

Point 3
The folded airbag on the gas generator then inflates, the pressure of the inflowing gas forcing open the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) cover along a predetermined fracture point.

Point 4
As more gas enters the bag, it pushes through the predetermined fracture point and fills to maximum volume.

Sequence of items 5 and 6

Point 5
The airbag reaches its full volume within approximately 30 ms.

Point 6
The airbag begins to deflate immediately as soon as it has reached its maximum volume. The gas escapes through a filter and the airbag collapses.

Disposal
Even if the nature of the accident necessitates deployment of stage 1 of the driver airbag only, stage 2 is subsequently ignited within a short time span. This ensures that both stages are deployed. The airbag unit can then be disposed of in the normal manner.
