Component Identification:

Function prerequisites:
Front passenger airbag squib 1 (R12/4) and front passenger airbag squib 2 (R12/5) of the front passenger airbag can be triggered in the following cases:
^ The front passenger seat occupancy and child seat recognition system (B48) has detected that the front passenger seat is occupied.
^ An accident with a certain severity has occurred.

Operating procedure
The restraint systems control unit (N2/7) delivers an electrical ignition pulse to the 1st and also to the 2nd ignition stage of the inflator depending on the severity of the impact.
1st ignition stage:
^ Passenger airbag squib 1 (R12/4)

2nd ignition stage:
^ Front passenger airbag squib 2 (R12/5)

Ignition can take place simultaneously or delayed, depending on the nature of the accident. When front passenger airbag squib 1 (R12/4) and front passenger airbag squib 2 (R12/5) are ignited, a high pressure occurs that is transferred to the relevant pressure chambers (1).

Effect
^ The pressure increase in the pressure chambers (1) causes the bursting disk (3) to burst. Now the gas mixture stored in the pressure chambers (1) can escape through the outlet channels (2).
^ The pressure of the incoming gas causes the airbag to deploy. The airbag flap is torn off above the glove compartment at the predetermined fracture point and the airbag inflates completely; the passenger is caught by the airbag.
^ The airbag reaches its full volume within approximately 35 ms.
^ The bag begins to deflate immediately after having reached its maximum volume. The gas escapes through a filter and the airbag collapses.

Disposal
Even if the nature of the accident necessitates deployment of stage 1 of the front passenger airbag only, stage 2 is subsequently ignited within a short time span. This ensures that both stages are deployed. The airbag unit can then be disposed of in the normal manner.
