GF91.60-P-4004-02SK Driver/Front Passenger Sidebag, Function

Operating procedure
When the deployment threshold for the sidebag is exceeded, the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) sends an electrical trigger pulse to the squib (4) in the hybrid-type inflator. The squib (4) ignites the solid fuel rings in the fuel chamber (2) and the solid fuel burns. The bursting disk (5) is burned open during this combustion procedure. The compressed precious air-fuel mixture (argon/helium, approx. 240 bar) escapes from the pressure chamber (1), mixes with the combustion gases and flows through the exhaust vent (3) into the airbag.

In doing so the escaping gas is heated by the burned off solid fuel, whereupon this additionally increases the volume of gas. As the gas flows into the bag under pressure, the airbag rapidly inflates, tearing open the sidebag housing and thrusting through the seam in the seat area and into the passenger compartment. The airbag reaches its full volume within approximately 20 ms. The bag begins to deflate immediately after having reached its maximum volume. The gas escapes from the airbag through a filter and the airbag collapses.
