Injury Hazard When Working on Airbag or ETR Units

Injury Hazard When Working on Airbag or ETR Units

Injury Hazard
From parts flying around when airbag or emergency tensioning retractors ignite uncontrolled or when stored with airbag exit surface downward. A hazard also exists when scrapping or opening with cutting torches or other cutting and separation tools, smelting or when unfired parts are subjected to fire or smoldering fire at garbage dumps.

Rules Of Conduct/Protective Measures
- Store removed airbags always with opening surface pointing up.
- Procurement, transport, storage, testing and installation work is permissible only by or under supervision of properly trained personnel.
- Install airbags and emergency tensioning retractors immediately after removing from storage.
- Protect airbags and emergency tensioning retractors from flying sparks, open flames and temperatures > 100°C .
- Do not transport airbags or emergency tensioning retractors in the passenger compartment, transport only in vehicle cargo space in original replacement parts package in such a manner that they cannot slide around.
- Do not bring airbags or emergency tensioning retractors into contact with grease, oil or cleaning agents.
- Perform system tests only In Installed state without passengers using approved test equipment (e.g. hand-held tester).
- Initial connection to an external power source or battery must be accomplished with ignition switched on previously and without passengers.
- Airbags and emergency tensioning retractors; which have fallen from a height of greater than 0.5 m must be replaced.
- Compact emergency retractors must be routed over familiar disposal paths for proper, environmentally-compatible scrapping in the original package.
- In all countries observe applicable legal regulations there for proper environmentally compatible scrapping.

Before starting any bodywork or retrofitting, work on airbags or emergency tensioning retractors or work on components connected to the airbags or emergency tensioning retractors or requiring manipulations with their circuit (e.g. when removing the steering wheel).
- Remove ignition key.
- Disconnect extraneous power sources (e.g. charger).
- When working in passenger compartment or performing welding work, disconnect plug from control module

On Vehicles With Keyless Go
Ensure that no circuits are switched.
