The electronic selector lever module control unit (N15/5) receives analog and digital signals, it then actuates various components and sends corresponding data to various control units over the Controller Area Network bus Class C (engine compartment) (CAN-C).

The selector lever positions and touch shifts carried out are detected in a non-contact manner by means of opto-electronic switches. A photoelectric barrier is closed or interrupted each time the position of the selector lever is changed.

The electronic selector lever module control unit (N15/5) is networked over CAN-C with the following control units:
^ Instrument cluster (A1)
^ ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10)
^ ETC [EGS] control unit (N15/3)
^ ESP and BAS control unit (N47-5)
^ EIS [EZS] control unit (N73)
^ Steering column module (N80)

- Circuit 87 (power supply)
- Status of transmission mode switch (S16/5)

The following information is received:
^ sent from ESP and BAS control unit (N47-5)
- Wheel speed and left rear direction of rotation
- Wheel speed and right rear direction of rotation
- Selected braking torque
- Brake engaged

^ sent from EIS [EZS] control unit (N73)
- Circuit 50

- Stop lamp actuation feedback
- Drive authorization system (DAS [FBS]) message

^ sent from steering column module (N80)
- Status of left steering wheel gear shifter (S110/2) and right steering wheel gear shifter (S111/2) (vehicles up to 31.5.06 with code (428) Steering wheel shift buttons)
- Status of steering wheel gear shifter MINUS (S110/1) and steering wheel gear shifter PLUS (S111/1) (vehicles as of 1.6.06 with code (428) Steering wheel shift buttons)
