AR35.31-P-0550-13T Calculating Shim and Inserting Into Rear Axle Housing

AR35.31-P-0550-13T Calculating shim and inserting into rear axle housing
- Rear axle center assembly dia. 198 [models 171.456, 211.056/256 up to 31.5.06, 211.065/082/087]

Special Tools:

Component Identification:

1 Clamp commercially available dia. gauge in gauge stand and mount on measuring plate.
2 Adjust dial indicator at measuring body (051b) 140 589 14 21 00 part 01 to "0" under approx. 3 mm preload, thus the measuring body height "B1" is adjusted.

Component Identification:

3 Fit tapered roller bearing outer race (46b) on tapered roller bearing inner race of drive pinion (47) and attach magnetic disk (052c) 140 589 41 63 00, part 03.
4 Insert drive pinion (47) in the measuring plate and measure the drive pinion height with tapered roller bearing and magnetic disk (052c).

Enter number 1 in the data sheet
5 Read off the difference "B" between the measuring body height "B1" and drive pinion height with magnetic disk (052c) and read off in the data sheet under number 1 (e.g. 1.79 mm).

Enter number 2 in the data sheet

Component Identification:

6 Read off basic deviation "a" at end face of drive pinion (+ or -) and enter under number 2 (e.g. +0.06) in data sheet.

Calculate interim sum in the data sheet
7 Add (+) or subtract (-) numbers 1 and 2, depending on the prefix (+ or -) of the value on the drive pinion (47)

Component Identification:

8 Insert the measuring body (051b) part 01 of the measuring device 140 589 14 21 00 in the rear axle housing.
9 Screw down measuring body (051b) with fastening piece 140 589 14 21 00 part 02 and hexagon bolt.

Component Identification:

10 Insert the left measuring device ring (052e) 140 589 41 63 00 part 01 from the outside inwards exactly all the way into the rear axle housing.
11 Insert the right measuring device ring (052d) 140 589 41 63 00 part 02 from the inside outwards exactly all the way into the rear axle housing.

Component Identification:

12 Insert dial indicator (052a) with measuring pin into the measuring device (052) 126 589 00 21 00.

The measuring pin for the dial indicator (052a) is screwed in on the adjusting piece (052b) 126 589 00 21 00 part 10.

13 Press the adjusting piece (052b) 126 589 00 21 00 part 10 against the measuring device (052) and adjust the dial indicator (052a) to "0" under 2 mm preload. Tighten the clamp screw and when doing so check the "0" position of the dial gauge (052a), adjust if necessary.

Component Identification:

14 Insert the measuring device (052) through the left bore in the rear axle housing.

When inserting measuring device (052) into rear axle housing, ensure that measuring pin of dial indicator is not damaged in bore.

Enter number 3 in the data sheet

Component Identification:

15 Measure the difference "Al" between the adjusted gage dimension and end face of measuring body and enter in the data sheet under number 3 in the positive (+) or negative (-) direction (e.g. -0.01 mm measured and thus negative direction).

The specification of positive (+) or negative (-) direction is related to the direction of rotation of the dial gage pointer. The counterclockwise direction of rotation means negative direction and clockwise means positive direction.

Calculate the thickness of the shim "S" in the data sheet

16 Add (+) or subtract (-) interim sum of the values from number 1 and number 2 as well as the value from number 3. The calculated value reveals the thickness of the shim.

Example::

Component Identification:

17 Remove the measuring device (052) and measuring device races (052d, 052e) from the rear axle housing. Detach measuring body.
18 Insert the shim with the calculated shim thickness "S" into the rear axle housing.

Only hardened shims may be used. They are available in various thicknesses (see parts list). If necessary, grind down the shim accordingly.
