AR35.31-P-0550-17T Adjusting Friction Torque of Drive Pinion Bearing

AR35.31-P-0550-17T Adjusting friction torque of drive pinion bearing
- Rear axle center assembly dia. 198 [models 171.456, 211.056/256 up to 31.5.06, 211.065/082/087]

Test Values For Friction Torque Of Rear Axle Differential:

Special Tools:

Component Identification:

1 Push pin wrench (040) and socket wrench bit (040a) onto joint flange (41) and carefully tighten hexagon collar nut until the specified friction torque is reached.

When tightening the hexagon collar nut, rotate the drive pinion several times and by applying some light blows to the rear axle housing, ensure that the tapered rollers are correctly positioned in the bearing track.

Component Identification:

2 To check, push torque measuring instrument (040b) with connection piece (040c) onto socket wrench bit (040a) and spin drive pinion at approx. 60 rpm. Read off friction torque.

If the friction torque exceeds the specified torque, remove the drive pinion again and insert a new spacer sleeve.

Component Identification:

Under no circumstances may the friction torque be reduced by loosening the hexagon collar nut (40) as otherwise the preload of the tapered roller bearings (43, 46) would be too low. The consequence would be play in the drive pinion while driving (47) and with it rear axle drive noise.

The tapered roller bearings (43, 46) of the drive pinion (47) must be installed with a certain pretension. This constant remaining preload is achieved by the spacer sleeve (44) located between the tapered roller bearing inner race and the drive pinion (47) being compressed when the hexagon collar nut (40) is tightened.

If the friction torque is too low when the drive pinion (47) is cranked, i.e. the preload of the tapered roller bearings (43, 46) is too low, the hexagon collar nut (40) should be tightened. If the specified friction torque is fallen below the drive pinion (47) is to be removed again and a new spacer sleeve (44) is to be inserted.
