AR35.31-P-0550-18T Checking Adjustment Dimension of Drive Pinion

AR35.31-P-0550-18T Checking adjustment dimension of drive pinion
- Rear axle center assembly dia. 198 [models 171.456, 211.056/256 up to 31.5.06, 211.065/082/087]

Test Values For Rear Axle Differential:

Special Tools:

Component Identification:

1 Fit magnetic disk (052c) 140 589 41 63 00, part 05, onto end face of drive pinion (47) to measure adjustment dimension "A".

Component Identification:

2 Insert the left measuring device ring (052e) 140 589 41 63 00 part 01 from the outside inwards exactly up to the stop in the rear axle housing.
3 Insert the right measuring device ring (052d) 140 589 41 63 00 part 02 from the inside outwards exactly up to the stop in the rear axle housing.

Component Identification:

4 Insert dial gauge (052a) with measuring pin in the measuring device (052).
5 Press the adjusting piece (052b) 126 589 00 21 00 part 10 against the measuring device (052) and adjust the dial gauge (052a) to "0" under 2 mm preload. Tighten the clamp screw and when doing so check the "0" position of the dial gauge (052a), adjust if necessary.

The measuring pin for the dial gauge (052a) is screwed into the adjusting piece (052b).

Component Identification:

6 Insert the measuring device (052) through the left bore in the rear axle housing.

When inserting measuring device (052) into rear axle housing, ensure that measuring pin of dial indicator is not damaged in bore.

Component Identification:

7 Read off adjustment dimension "A". The adjustment dimension must be within the tolerance.

Component Identification:

The adjustment dimension "A" is the design basic adjustment of the drive pinion, whereby the basic deviation "a" must be within the permissible tolerance in the positive (+) or negative (-) direction. The basic deviation "a" is the dimension which is indicated on the end face of the drive pinion.

If the adjustment dimension is outside the tolerance, the shim installed should be reground or a new shim of appropriate thickness should be installed. However, it is absolutely essential to use a new spacer sleeve for the tapered roller bearings.

8 Remove measuring device and magnetic disk from rear axle housing.
