General
The route guidance through voice output function is an assistance function that assists the driver without distracting him from the traffic. The destination-oriented navigation of the navigation system is supported by voice outputs with the following information:
- Direction information
- Name of road onto which the next turnoff should be made

The following languages are available for voice output, except code (830) China version:
- German
- English (UK and USA)
- French
- Spanish
- Italian

And the following languages are also available for vehicles except code (494) USA version:
- Dutch
- Danish
- Swedish
- Portuguese
- Turkish
- Russian
- Chinese

Further voice outputs take place at the start of the route calculation, when an intermediate destination has been reached, or when the destination has been reached. On vehicles, except cod (494) USA version, for dynamic route guidance additional voice messages are issued in response to route influences by traffic messages.

Operating instructions
The route guidance via voice output function can be operated using the following components:
- Control buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3)
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS])

During an active voice output the volume of the announcement can be adjusted by the following components:
- Using the rotary actuator on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit
- With the + and - buttons for setting specific functions and volume control (S111s1) in the right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)

Function sequence for route guidance through voice outputs
The navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit links word segments during voice output to form complete instructions or information and generates speech signals. If required, the voice signals are forwarded using audio signals via Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the amplifier for sound system (N40/3) (with code (810) Sound system), where they are amplified and output via direct lines over the following speakers:
- Left front door speaker (H4/5)
- Right front door speaker (H4/6)
- Left rear door speaker (H4/3)
- Right rear door speaker (H4/4)
- Left front door tweeter (H4/33)
- Right front door tweeter (H4/34)
- Left rear door tweeter (H4/35)
- Right rear door tweeter (H4/36)
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill) (H4/27)
- Left rear surround speaker (H4/54)
- Right rear surround speaker (H4/57)

The voice signal for the subwoofer speaker (H4/29) travels from the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via MOST to the amplifier for sound system, and from there via direct lines to the subwoofer amplifier (N40/9) and then to the subwoofer speaker.

In vehicles without code (810) Sound system, the voice signals are amplified in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit using audio signals and output via direct lines over the following speakers:
- Left front door speaker
- Right front door speaker
- Left rear door speaker
- Right rear door speaker
- Left front door tweeter
- Right front door tweeter
- Left rear door tweeter
- Right rear door tweeter
