Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Preparation For Testing

1. Turn ignition key off.
2. If using a voltmeter, connect a jumper wire from self-test trigger (circuit 201) to ground on self-test connector (circuit 60). Connect voltmeter from battery positive terminal to self-test output on self-test connector. Set voltmeter on DC volt range to read from 0 to 15 VDC.
3. If using a STAR tester, connect black lead of tester to negative battery post, red lead to self-test output terminal on self-test connector and white lead to self-test trigger terminal of connector. Refer to back of tester for additional information.
4. On engines equipped with a vacuum purge valve, disconnect hose from carbon canister to canister control valve, but do not plug. When testing and servicing is completed, be sure to reconnect this hose.
5. Ensure that carburetor linkage is off fast idle cam and choke is fully open.
