Air Flow Meter/Sensor: Description and Operation

Four Cylinder Engines

On 1983 - 85 4-97.6 and 1986 - 88 4-116 engines, the air vane meter, located between the throttle body and air cleaner, is mounted on a bracket near the left side shock tower. On 1983 - 86 4-140 turbocharged engines, the air vane meter, located between air cleaner and turbocharger, is mounted on a bracket below air cleaner in lower righthand corner of engine compartment.
The air vane meter, located between the throttle body and air cleaner, is mounted on a bracket near the left side shock tower. Housed in the air vane meter are the vane air flow and vane air temperature sensors. The air flow sensor measures the mass of air flow to the engine and the temperature sensor measures incoming air temperature. These two signals are sent to the ECU to compute mass air flow. This value is used to determine necessary fuel flow to the injectors to provide the optimum air/fuel ratio.
