When published diagnostics procedures indicate a need to replace the EGR vent and control solenoids inspect wiring harness and solenoid terminals.

When subject vehicles experience an intermittent spark knock and/or loss of power, use diagnostic procedures, published in Volume H of the Shop Manual to isolate the concern. If the EEC IV self test directs replacement of the EGR vent/control solenoids, as indicated by service codes 83 and/or 84, inspect the wiring harness terminals for rust. If rust is present, replace the wiring harness connectors along with the solenoids.

Before reconnecting the solenoids and harness connectors, pack the connectors with Lubriplate DS-ES grease. Install the connectors and repeat Quick Test and continue with the diagnostic procedures as directed.

NOTE: The presence of rust deposits on the terminals and/or terminal housing does not mean by itself that they are defective. They should be replaced only when directed by the diagnostic procedures.
