CALIBRATIONS: All
Vehicles which exhibit engine detonation can be serviced by installing either a 3~ or 6~ retard octane rod.
1. Verify that the proper grade of fuel is being used. and the specified coolant level is maintained.
2. Verify the initial timing is set to specification.
3. If after verifying the above, the detonation still persists, retard the initial timing in 3~ increments to a maximum of 6~. The timing is retarded by installing a 3~ retard octane rod (E3FZ-12A335-B) or a 6~ retard octane rod (E3FZ-12A335-C) using the procedures found in Section 23 of the Car Shop Manual.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
