Lock Cylinder Housing Replace

1984---87 ESCORT, LYNX, EXP, TEMPO & TOPAZ

EXCEPT TILT COLUMN

Removal
1. Remove steering column assembly.
2. Remove turn signal switch attaching screws, then the switch.
3. Remove upper shaft bearing as described previously.
4. Remove bolts securing lock cylinder housing to outer tube flange bracket, then rotate ignition switch to start position and pull actuator interlock out of clearance hole in tube. Lift casting off upper steering shaft.
5. Remove ignition lock drive gear.
Installation
1. Install ignition lock drive gear and actuator.
2. Using a suitable punch, upset the serrated portion of the upper shaft sufficiently to assure an interference fit between the bearing inner race and the steering column upper shaft. Place lock cylinder housing on steering column flange bracket with upper steering shaft protruding through upper bearing. Turn ignition switch to start position to locate actuator interlock through the clearance hole in outer tube. Install lock cylinder housing bolts and torque to 12---21 ft. lbs.
3. Install upper shaft bearing and sleeve over end of steering shaft.
4. Place a piece of pipe ({3-4} inch inside dia. x 1{1-2} inch long) over end of steering column upper shaft, then install steering wheel nut. Tighten steering wheel nut until steering shaft is drawn up into bearing enough to allow installation of snap ring in groove on shaft. Remove nut and pipe.
5. Install snap ring, turn signal switch and steering column.

TILT COLUMN

Removal
1. Remove steering column assembly.
2. Remove turn signal switch attaching screws, then the switch.
3. Remove steering wheel, then upper conical spring, bearing plate and C-clip ring, Fig. 12.
4. Move tilt column to uppermost position to unload spring, then using tool T70P-3D739-A or equivalent, remove tilt pins. Use care when removing pivot pins as the tilt spring is still under tension.
5. Remove upper casting from lock cylinder housing.
6. Remove clamp from lower end of steering shaft, then pull steering shaft from end of column.
7. Remove lock cylinder housing to outer tube flange bracket attaching bolts, then rotate ignition switch to start position and pull actuator interlock out of clearance hole in tube.
8. Remove ignition lock drive gear and actuator.

Installation
1. Position lock cylinder housing on upper steering column flange bracket. Place ignition switch in start position to locate actuator interlock through clearance hole in outer tube. Install lock cylinder housing bolts and torque to 12---20 ft. lbs.
2. Install steering shaft assembly into steering column tube. Use care not to damage lower bearing.
3. Install upper casting assembly with tilt spring in position, over end of shaft and down onto lock cylinder ears making certain lock lever is latched into top tilt position.
4. Install tilt pivot pins through lower casting holes and into upper casting using a suitable C-clamp. Pivot pins must be flush with outer casting surface.
5. Install C-clip ring on upper shaft groove above bearing.
6. Install upper bearing plate and conical spring. Press conical spring onto upper shaft until spring snaps into upper groove.
7. Install turn signal switch, then lower column clamp, ensuring locating nib is in hole in shaft. Install steering column and steering wheel.
