Differential Case Disassembly

EXC. TRACTION-LOK LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL
1. If differential bearings are to be replaced, remove and replace with suitable puller.
2. On 6.75 inch axles, make reference marks between ring gear, differential case cover and case, then proceed as follows:
a. Remove ring gear attaching bolts and discard, then using a soft faced hammer, tap ring gear from case.
b. Remove left side of differential case, then drive out pinion shaft lock pin with suitable drift.
c. Using suitable brass drift, drive out pinion shaft. Remove pinion gears, side gears and thrust washers.
3. On all axles, if the ring gear backlash measured during removal exceeded specifications, proceed as follows:
a. On 6.75 inch axles, assemble differential case, cover and ring gear.
b. Install differential bearing cups on cones, then install differential case in rear housing with drive pinion removed.
c. Install a .265 inch shim on left side of case, then install bearing cap and tighten bolts finger tight. Install progressively larger shims on right side of case until the largest shim selected can be installed with a slight drag. Install bearing cap and torque bolts to 70---85 ft. lbs.
4. On all axles, rotate differential several turns in either direction to ensure free rotation and to seat bearings.
5. Mount suitable dial indicator to axle housing, then check ring gear backface runout. Ring gear backface runout should be within .004 inch. If ring gear backface runout is now within specifications, the original out of spec. reading was caused by insufficient differential bearing preload. If ring gear backface runout is still not within specifications, proceed to step 6.
6. Remove differential case from axle housing, then remove ring gear. Install differential case less ring gear in housing following procedures given above.
7. Check differential case runout. Runout should be within .004 inch. If runout is now within specifications, ring gear is out of specifications and should be replaced. If runout is not within specifications, the differential case is damaged and should be replaced.

Traction-Lok:

Ford Type
1. Remove and discard ring gear to differential case attaching bolts.
2. Tap on ring gear using a suitable mallet and remove ring gear from case.
3. Remove pinion shaft lock screw and pinion shaft.
4. Remove preloaded ``S'' shaped spring, Fig. 3. Use caution when removing ``S'' shaped spring since it is under tension.
5. Rotate pinion gears and thrust washers using 12 inch socket extension inserted into pinion gear rotator T80P-4205-A or equivalent until they can be removed through access hole.
6. Remove left and right side gears, clutch packs and shims, Fig. 4. Note order of removal and side removed from and tag for reference during assembly.

Borg-Warner Type
1. Place differential case in suitable vise, then remove pinion lock bolt.
2. Loosen eight case cap screws leaving three to four threads remaining.
3. Loosen vise slightly. Using a soft hammer, tap flange half of case lightly until it loosens.
4. Remove case, cap bolts and case flange half from vise.
5. Remove cone and side gear assemblies, thrust plates, springs, pinion shaft, gears and thrust washers, Fig. 5. During disassembly, note location of parts for proper reassembly.
