Electronic Brake Control Module: Description and Operation

The electronic control unit (ECU) is located in the engine compartment. This unit is a self-test non-repairable unit consisting of two micro-processors which are programmed identically. The ECU monitors system operation during normal driving as well as during anti-lock braking. Under normal driving conditions, the micro-processors transmit short test pulses to solenoid valves to check electrical system. Under wheel lock conditions, the ECU produces signals to open and close the appropriate solenoid valve. This results in moderate pulsations in brake pedal. During anti-lock braking, moderate pulsation in the brake pedal are accompanied by a change in pedal height. This rise in pedal height will continue until the pedal travel switch closes and pump will shut off. During normal braking, the brake pedal feel will be identical to a standard brake system.
