Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Electronic Operation

DESCRIPTION
The electronic system controls line pressure, transaxle shifting, and torque converter lockup by means of solenoid operation. The line pressure solenoid regulates transaxle line pressure, controls kickdown, and optimizes clutch and braking pressure during shifting. The shift solenoids actuate friction elements (clutches and bands) to control shifting in the front planet. The torque converter clutch solenoid minimizes lockup shock and enables the powertrain to deliver a 1:1 ratio to maximize fuel economy.

The following are electronic control system inputs:
^ Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) signal
^ Transmission Oil Temperature (TOT) signal
^ Manual Lever Position (MLP) signal
^ Brake On/Off (BOO) signal
^ Throttle Position (TP) signal
^ Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) signal
^ Pulse Signal Generator (PSG) signal
^ Idle Switch (IDL) signal
^ Data Link Connector (DLC)

The following are electronic control system outputs:
^ 1-2 shift solenoid
^ 2-3 shift solenoid
^ 3-4 shift solenoid
^ Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoid
^ Data Link Connector (DLC)
