Vehicle Speed Sensor: Description and Operation

PURPOSE
The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) provides an AC voltage signal for the speedometer.

LOCATION
Mounted to the transaxle, above the final drive gear.

OPERATION
The VSS, as it is turned by the speedometer pinion, generates an AC signal which is sent to the instrument cluster. The signal is converted to a D/C signal and used as input to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and the Transmission Control Module (TCM).
