Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Charging System: Description and Operation

The B terminal is connected internally to the rectifier bridge output. Externally, the B terminal supplies generator output (DC) to the electrical system. The generator output charges the battery and operates the electrical accessories while the engine is running.

Alternator Rear Terminal Circuits:

The L terminal is connected internally, through a network of integrated circuits, to the field coil. When the ignition key is turned to the ON position, the field coil turns on the voltage regulator power transistor.

The S terminal is connected internally to the voltage regulator sensing circuit. Externally, the S terminal is connected to the ignition side of the ignition switch. The S terminal tells the voltage regulator how much generator output is required.

The Integrated Circuit (IC) electronic voltage regulator is part of the rotor, brush and brush holder assembly. There is no voltage adjustment. The IC voltage regulator automatically reduces the regulated voltage when ambient temperature increases, so that the proper battery charging voltage is maintained.
