Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Normal Scan Data Values (Includes PIDs)

Description
The parameter identification (PID) mode allows access to certain data values, analog and digital inputs and outputs, calculated values, and system status information. Throughout the manual, there will be references to PID values. Some of the PID references are from a generic OBD II PID list all scan tools must access. If a Ford PID is referenced and is not on this list, it can be accessed from the New Generation STAR (NGS) Tester scan tool (or equivalent) through the Diagnostic Data Link Menu. If a generic scan tool (GST) is used for non-generic OBD II PIDs, a string of characters may have to be entered.

Accessing Generic OBD II PIDs with the New Generation STAR (NGS) Tester

1. Perform safety precautions.
2. Connect NGS to OBD II DLC.
3. Select VEHICLE & ENGINE SELECTION menu (OPTIONAL).
4. Select NEW VEHICLE YEAR & MODEL (OPTIONAL).
5. Select year, engine, model with the appropriate qualifier, if needed (i.e., transmission, 49 state, California) (OPTIONAL).
6. Select GENERIC OBD II FUNCTIONS.
- Press CONT button if all OBD II monitors are not complete.
7. Select PID DATA MONITOR.
8. Turn key ON or start vehicle.
9. Select the PIDs, press TRIGGER.
