Turbo Diesel - Hard Starting When Cold
83mitsubishi01SUBJECT:
TURBO DIESEL GLOW PLUG RELAY GROUNDING
NO. STB-83-08-001
DATE February 1983
MODEL 1983 Turbo Diesel Trucks
If a "hard starting when cold" condition is encountered on a Turbo Diesel Pickup, the cause may be inadequate grounding of the glow plug relays. The ground circuit of the relays has been improved in production beginning on December 15, 1982 as follows:
1. The painted glow plug relay bracket has been replaced with a galvanized bracket.
2. Self tapping bolts are now used to attach the bracket to the body.
These changes are effective beginning with the following VINs:
JA7FP449*DY400983 JA7FP449*DY500642 JA7FK449*DY400964 JA7FK449*DY500506
When troubleshooting a Turbo Diesel engine which is hard to start when cold, first check for paint on the glow plug relay bracket. It the bracket is painted, the field correction procedure should be used to correct the condition. If the bracket is galvanized, this procedure will not improve the ground and the cause may be presumed to be elsewhere.
Field Correction Procedure
1. Remove and discard bolt (A)
2. Install the self tapping bolt (P/N MB133273) to one end of the jumper harness (P/N AT93FW1X01), then install it in place of bolt (A)
3. Install the other end of the jumper harness to bolt (B)
4. Tighten both bolts to 3.5 N-m (30 in.lbs.)
