Glow Plug - Removal/Installation

SUBJECT:

GLOW PLUG REMOVAL/INSTALLATION

NO. STB-83-08-015

DATE September 1983

MODEL Turbo-Diesel Truck

The Super Quick Glow system in the 1984 turbo-diesel engine employs fast-heating glow plugs which have molded ceramic tips. Because the ceramic electrode tips are extremely brittle, the glow plugs must be handled very carefully.

Here is a suggestion for removing and installing the glow plugs to avoid damage.

REMOVAL

Use a wrench only to loosen the glow plug. Once loose, unscrew the plug with the fingers.

INSTALLATION

Insert the glow plug straight into its hole, and start it with the fingers before beginning to tighten with the wrench. Use a 12 mm deep socket. Tighten to 15-19 N-m. (11 -14 ft.lbs.)

NOTE

An electrode might look OK but still have a hairline crack in it, Even a hairline crack in the ceramic can result in a failure after several hours running.
