Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

EGR Valve

Fig. 150 Testing EGR valve:

1. Remove the EGR valve and check it for sticking and carbon deposits. If necessary clean the valve with a suitable solvent.
2. Connect a hand vacuum pump to the EGR valve, Fig. 150.
3. Apply a vacuum of 67 kPa (20 in. Hg) and verify that the EGR valve diaphragm chamber is air tight.
4. Apply 8 kPa (3 in. Hg) and verify that air will not pass through the EGR valve.
5. Increase the vacuum to 23 kPa (7 in. Hg) and verify that it is possible to blow air through the EGR valve.
6. When reinstalling the EGR valve replace the gasket and tighten to 7-11 Nm (5 to 8 ft. lbs.).
