The catalytic converter, Fig. 25 promotes both oxidation and reduction of the exhaust gas mixture to achieve emission specifications before release to the atmosphere. The catalytic converter is a monolythic three-way device that uses catalytic compounds applied to an integrally constructed honeycomb carrier surface installed in the center of the exhaust pipe.

The catalytic converter removes CO, HC and NOx from the exhaust stream. It operates most effectively at the stoichiometric fuel-air mixture ratio, Fig. 26.
