Pick-Up Coil: Testing and Inspection

Igniter R&R:

RESISTANCE TEST

Testing of the pick-up coil (signal generator) can be done with a digital volt-ohm meter.

1. Remove the pick-up coil from the distributor.
2. Connect an ohmmeter to the pick-up coil terminals. Measure the resistance.

RESISTANCE: 140 - 180 Ohms.

If the pick-up coil is out of specification, it will need to be replaced.

Pickup Coil Test:

VOLTAGE TEST
1. Remove the pick-up coil from the distributor.
2. Connect a digital voltmeter (set to 300mv range) to the pick-up coil terminals.
3. Pass a non magnetized screwdriver back and forth across the pole of the pick-up coil. Verify that the meter indicates a voltage change.

If the pick-up coil fails the previous tests, it will need to be replaced.

AIR GAP TEST

1. Remove distributor cap and rotor.
2. Turn the distributor until the pole of the pick-up coil is aligned with one of the points of the reluctor (signal rotor).
3. Using a non-metallic feeler gauge, check the clearance between the pick-up coil and the reluctor point.

AIR GAP: 0.2 - 0.4mm (.008 - .015in.)

4. If not as specified, refer to ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES for proper adjustment procedure.
