Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Pick-Up Coil: Adjustments

The air gap should be adjusted whenever the pick-up coil or igniter is serviced. When checking the air gap use a non magnetic feeler gauge.

Igniter, Signal Rotor, and Air Gap Overview:

AIR GAP ADJUSTMENT
1. Remove the distributor cap and rotor.
2. Turn the distributor until the pole of the pick-up coil is aligned with one of the points of the reluctor (signal rotor).
3. Place a non metallic feeler gauge between the reluctor and the pick-up coil pole. Measure the clearance.

AIR GAP: 0.8 mm (.031 in.)

4. Adjust the gap to specification by loosening the mounting screws and sliding the pick-up coil on the breaker plate.
