Throttle Position Sensor: Adjustments

CAUTION: Before attempting to adjust the Throttle Sensor, make certain the idle speed and ignition timing are correctly adjusted. See this section for the proper procedures.
Adjustment requirements:
a. Engine fully warmed up. (185-205F deg)
b. All lights, engine cooling fan and accessories "off".
c. Transmission in P or N.
d. Steering wheel in the straight ahead position (models with power steering only)

1. Verify that the throttle cable has enough slack that it is not holding the throttle open in any way. Loosen the adjustment bolts for the throttle cable if necessary.

2. Using an ohmmeter carefully back probe the Throttle Position Sensor connector into terminals 1 and 3. Refer to the connector in the image.

Adjustment Of TPS (SAS Gap Measurement):

3. Insert a 0.65 mm (.0256 in.) feeler gauge between the fixed SAS and the throttle lever.
4. Loosen the TPS installation screws turn the sensor fully clockwise and check for continuity.
5. Slowly turn the TPS counterclockwise to the point that no continuity occurs and secure the mounting screws.
6. Using a high-impedance digital voltmeter, carefully back probe the throttle position connector into terminals 1 and 3. Refer to the connector in the image.
7. With the key on, engine off, check that the output voltage of the TPS is within 0.4 - 1.0 volts.
NOTE: Clockwise rotation of the sensor increases the voltage output while counter-clockwise rotation reduces voltage.

8. Tighten the sensor set screws securely.
9. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
10. If the throttle cable was previously loosened, return the cable to the proper adjustment.
