Ignition Timing: Adjustments
1. Precondition the engine as follows:a. Engine coolant temperature at 85-95°C (185-205°F).
b. Lights, electric cooling fan, and all electrical accessories off.
c. Transmission in neutral or park.
d. Steering wheel in the neutral position.
Connecting A Tachometer:
2. Install a paper clip into the tachometer check connector.
3. Connect a tachometer to the clip.
Ignition Timing Adjustment Connector:
4. With the engine off, ground the ignition timing adjustment terminal with a jumper lead (routed at the top of the firewall).
5. Start the engine and allow it to run at curb idle speed.
Ignition Timing Inspection:
6. Connect a timing light to the #1 spark plug wire (front) and check the timing.
Basic Ignition Timing
5° ± 2° BTDC.
Adjusting Timing:
7. If necessary loosen the distributor mounting nut and adjust timing by rotating the distributor.
8. Stop the engine.
9. Disconnect the ignition timing jumper wire and re-start the engine.
10. Recheck the timing.
Actual Ignition Timing
8° ± 2° BTDC.
Actual ignition timing may vary slightly under the direction of the ECU. If necessary re-check Basic Ignition Timing. If basic ignition timing is correct then no further action is necessary.
