When a malfunction of the main sensors has been detected by the on-board diagnostic, the fail safe/back-up functions control the conditions which enable the vehicle to be driven safely by preset conditions built into the engine control module.

Conditions set at time of malfunction
- Check the throttle position sensor signal and the crankshaft position sensor signal to find out the injector's basic driving time and the basic ignition timing from the preset conditions.
- The idle speed will not be controlled, but the idle air control motor will be set in a fixed position.

Intake air temperature.

Conditions set at time of malfunction
Intake air temperature will be set to a value of 25°C (77°F).

Throttle position sensor.

Conditions set at time of malfunction
The increased amount of fuel called for on acceleration will not be made.

After the idle speed control motor plunger has made contract idle speed control will not be performed.

The engine coolant temperature will be set to a value of 80C (176°F).

Camshaft position sensor.

Fuel is injected with irregular timing in Numbers 1, 3, 4 and 2 cylinders in that order. (This occurs when the top dead center position of No.1 cylinder has never been detected after the ignition switch has been turned on.)

The barometric pressure will be set to a value of 101 kPa (760 mmHg, 14.7 psi.).

Engine will not enter closed loop operation.
