NEW MODEL SERVICE INFORMATION AND FEATURES - 2009 OUTLANDER

Purpose

This bulletin contains important new model service information for the 2009 Outlander. Refer to the 2009 Outlander service manual on MEDIC or CD (p/n MSCD-11C-2009M), and the owner's manual for details on these and other features.

AFFECTED VEHICLES:
2009 Outlander

SERVICE INFORMATION

The majority of changes to the 2009 Outlander are cosmetic. There are 2 that are very important to the service technician; a stretch fit power steering pump drive belt and permanent DTCs in the PCM. These will be covered later in this bulletin. Other changes include:

New Feature Highlights

^ California spec XLS models achieve ULEV (Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle) certification and are badged on the rear side glass.

^ The center display has been recalibrated for better daytime visibility.

^ ORVR (On-Board Refueling Vapor Recovery) check valve has been eliminated.

^ Rain light sensor and auto (on/off) headlight control available as an option with the Luxury Package.

^ HDD capacity increased from 30 to 40GB.

^ Rear view camera available on vehicles with HDD Navigation System.

STRETCH-FIT POWER STEERING BELT

The 2009 Outlander V6 engine is equipped with a power steering belt that does not require the use of a belt tensioner. The elimination of the tensioner assembly simplifies installation and servicing.

REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE

Replacing the power steering belt is best done from under the vehicle.

1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist and remove the undercovers in the RH fender well area.

To remove the belt:

2. Remove the accessory drive belt (a/c and alternator drive belt).

3. Place special tool MB992276 on the inside of the belt, against the power steering pulley.

4. Place a 22 mm socket on the crankshaft pulley bolt to turn the engine over clockwise by hand. The remover will "walk" the belt off of the pulley.

To install the belt:

1. Place the hole at the end of installer MB992275 over the pulley, with the tab on the opposite end wedged between the belt and the pulley.

2. Place a 22 mm socket on the crankshaft pulley bolt to turn the engine over clockwise by hand.

The installer will "walk" the belt into place.

3. Install the accessory drive belt.

4. Reinstall the undercovers and lower the vehicle.

PERMANENT OBD-II DTCS

Background

Outlander V6 models for 2009 will be the first Mitsubishi to register OBD-II fault trouble codes as Permanent DTCs (PDTC) in the ECM as required by a new OBD-II regulation. All DTCs related to OBD-II are PDTCs. They must be stored on nonvolatile RAM and cannot be erased as a direct response to an external tool (MUT-III command), or by disconnecting the battery. The MUT-III will be used to turn off the MIL (Service Engine Soon light), but the PDTC will not be erased until the ECM confirms that the conditions that caused the PDTC to set are resolved. The ECM will then erase the PDTC.

Two operations must be performed after the MIL is turned off using the scan tool "Erase DTC" function, before a PDTC is actually erased:

1. An OBD-II specific drive cycle must be performed.

2. The drive cycle specific to the readiness monitor for the PDTC must be successfully completed.

For example, if a vehicle is repaired for any evaporative loss system PDTC (P0441, P0442, etc), the PDTC will not erase until the OBD-II drive cycle is completed and the evap system completes and passes its monitor. If successful, the PDTCs are erased. If the ECM detects that the conditions that set the PDTC are still present after repairs, the PDTC is not erased and the MIL illuminates again.

In the Service Department

Technicians will follow the standard diagnosis for a given DTC as described in the service manual to repair the conditions that set the PDTC.

Procedures for Erasing PDTC

1. Follow normal procedures to "Erase DTCs" with the MUT-III. This will cancel the MIL ON command in the ECM, but not erase the PDTC.

2. Refer to GROUP 13 - FUEL - DIAGNOSTIC FUNCTION - PERMANENT DTC for information on conducting both the OBD-II drive cycle and the readiness monitor drive cycle.

CAUTION:
Always conduct a drive cycle with with two people. One to drive, the other to monitor the MUT-III.

If there is no readiness monitor drive cycle relating to a PDTC as indicated above, perform the following procedure:

^ Start and stop the engine.

^ Wait 15 seconds or more and restart the engine.

^ Repeat this procedure at least 2 additional times.

^ Stop the engine.

This procedure cannot be used as an alternate if there is a readiness monitor drive cycle for a PDTC.
