Compressor Clutch: Service and Repair

1. Remove screw that secures clutch disc to shaft, Fig. 4.
2. Using tool No. J29890-2 or equivalent, remove clutch disc and retain spacer.
3. Using suitable pliers, remove pulley retaining snap ring, then remove pulley bearing retaining snap ring.
4. Using tool Nos. J29890-2, J29890-6, and J29890-7 or equivalents, remove pulley.
5. Disconnect coil lead and remove coil mounting screws, then remove coil assembly.
6. Reinstall pulley bearing retaining ring.
7. Check friction surfaces of clutch for damage and, if necessary, replace coil, pulley, bearing assembly, and clutch disc as a set.
8. Clean friction surfaces with suitable solvent.
9. Check coil wiring and repair as necessary.
10. Install clutch coil, torquing screws to 2.9-4.3 ft. lbs.
11. Position pulley on compressor.
12. Using tool Nos. J29890-10 and J29890-11, with tool placed on pulley bearing inner race, tap tool lightly to install pulley.
13. Seat pulley retaining ring, being careful not to damage bearing seal.
14. Insert disc onto shaft spline and hand press it onto shaft. Do not pound on disc or end of shaft, as internal damage to compressor will result.
15. Secure clutch disc to shaft, torquing attaching screw to 5.1-6.5 ft. lbs.
16. Check that clearance between disc and pulley is .012-.020 inch. If not, adjust with shims. When replacing compressor clutch assembly, break it in by engaging and disengaging clutch approximately 100 times in 10 second intervals.
