Rear Window Shade Kit - Hinge Bending/Paint Damage
TS85-035 Body and FrameApril 1, 1985
REAR WINDOW SHADE KIT, 1984-1985 200SX
APPLIED MODEL:
200SX Hatchback
SERVICE INFORMATION
This Technical Bulletin contains countermeasure service procedures for the rear window shade kit installed on the 1984 200SX Hatchbacks. Listed below are the conditions addressed:
A. ^ HINGE BENDING:
The upper hinges on some shade kits may bend due to forces produced by car wash equipment and/or rough handling during cleaning. If the shade kit does not have a brace on the current hinge, install the Shade Kit Countermeasure Kit (included with 1985 Shade Kit).
^ PAINT DAMAGE:
The lower corners of some shade kits may contact the rear deck lid, causing paint damage to the deck lid. If the current shade kit has a 1/4" gasket (see below), install the Shade Kit Countermeasure Kit (included with 1985 Shade Kit).
B. REAR HATCH STAYS:
The hatch of 1984-1985 non-turbo hatchbacks, which have been equipped with an optional rear spoiler, may require heavy duty hatch stays when a shade kit is installed due to the increased weight.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
A. Hinge Bending or Paint Damage
1. Remove the shade kit and straighten the hinges using a pair of pliers.
2. Place the louver on the window and slide both hinges onto the studs. Install one brace plate and two nuts to each hinge (see note). The plates should cover the bottom of the hinge and there should be at least 1/16" clearance from the hinge rivet when the shade kit is lowered.
NOTE: The brace plates are slightly arched. When installing the brace plates, it is important for the ends of the plates to be arched toward the hinge as shown in the side view below.
3. Check the fit at the top of the shade kit assembly and tighten the nuts to 45-50 in-lbs.
4. Place a soft cloth on the roof of the vehicle and lay the shade kit upside down on the cloth.
5. Remove and discard both attachment screws by cutting the retaining washer with a pair of wire cutters.
6. Brace the head of the new screw against the shade kit and install the 1/2" gasket and retaining washer by tapping the retainer with a 1/4" drive socket and a small hammer.
7. Install both 1/2" and 6" strips of foam tape on the bottom edges of the shade kit by removing the pressure sensitive backing and pressing the gaskets firmly against the shade. There should be at least 1/8" clearance between the bottom of the shade and the rear deck.
8. Adjust the two (2) rubber foot boots under louver #7 (counting from the top) so there is firm glass contact when the louver is secured. Then tighten the lock nut to the plastic boss.
B. Rear Hatch Stays
1. Remove the back door stay set and replace it with the heavy duty back door stay set (P/N 90450-18F00).
