TRANSMISSION JACK ADAPTER
APPLIED MODELS: 1987 & 1988 4WD Truck/Pathfinder with A/T
SERVICE INFORMATION
When removing the transmission/transfer case on 1987 4WD Truck/Pathfinders with automatic transmission, a new adapter plate (J-37296-1) must be used with the transmission jack adapter (GP8600), to help support the heavier transmission. On 1988 4WD A/T models a new transmission jack adapter (J-37296-2) should be used. (Adapter plate is not needed.)
SERVICE PROCEDURE
For 1987 Models
1. Mount the transmission/transfer case adapter (Special Tool GP8600) to the transmission jack plate using shop bolts (Figure 1).
2. Place the adapter plate P/N J-37296-1, over the adapter, sliding it over peg (A) (Figure 1).

3. If the four bolt-holes on the jack plate do not line up with the adapter, turn the adapter diagonally until two bolt-holes line up, and insert the bolts (Figure 2).
NOTE: The bolt-holes on the adapter are elongated to allow for line up with various types of jacks.

4. Place a tall jack stand at the rear of the transmission housing and remove the cross member and attaching parts.
5. Remove the two lower bolts at the rear of the transfer case (Figure 3).

6. Raise the transmission jack and mount the adapter to the transmission/ transfer case (two bolts at cross member mount and two bolts at rear of transfer case) as shown in Figure 4.

For 1988 Models
For 1988 models use the new transmission/transfer case adapter, P/N J-37296-2 (shown below), with the transmission jack as noted above, except adapter plate is not needed.
