Exhaust - Sulfur Odor

Classification:
EC97-022

Reference:
NTB97-090

Date:
December 15, 1997

1995-97.5 ALTIMA EXHAUST ODOR

APPLIED VEHICLE:
1995-97.5 Altima (U13)

APPLIED ENGINE # :
KA24DE

SERVICE INFORMATION

If an Altima operated in a federal emissions state demonstrates a sulfur or "rotten egg" odor coming from the tailpipe, this condition may be caused by higher levels of sulfur in the fuels.

NOTE:
Fuels that contain higher levels of sulfur may be sold in all states except California. Countermeasure ECMs have been developed to reduce this sulfur odor, which occurs during idle operation.

IMPORTANT:
These ECMs are for use only in vehicles with customer complaints of sulphur or "rotten egg" odor. All other ECM replacements, for whatever reason, require use of the "current" part number. Do not replace the catalytic converter for this complaint.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

If you have an Altima customer with a complaint of sulfur or "rotten egg" odor, replace the vehicle ECM. Refer to Figure 1 for ECM location.
