Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

Head gaskets used on these engines are of a special composition material that is not to be used with a sealer.
Prior to installation, clean the head bolts and dip in engine oil. Tighten head bolts in steps and in the sequence shown in Fig. 4. Final torquing should be to the specifications listed in ``Engine Tightening Specifications.''
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Drain radiator and cylinder block.
3. Remove intake and exhaust manifolds.
4. Remove ground strap from left cylinder head.
5. Remove rocker arm bolts, pivots, rocker arms and pushrods. Keep rocker arms, pivots and pushrods in order so they can be installed in the same position.
6. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts and remove cylinder head.
7. Reverse procedure to install. Torque cylinder head bolts in sequence shown in Fig. 4 and torque intake manifold bolts in sequence shown in Fig. 5.
