Rocker Arm Assembly: Service and Repair

Fig. 18 Cylinder head exploded view:

Fig. 19 Type 1 rocker arm pivot. 1982-83 V8 engine:

Fig. 20 Type 2 rocker arm pivot. 1982-83 V8 engine:

This engine uses valve rotators, Fig. 18. The rotator operates on a sprag clutch principle utilizing the collapsing action of a coil spring to give rotation to the rotor body which turns the valve.
Some 1982-83 V8-350 diesel engines may experience valve train ticking noise and/or exhaust backfire. This condition may be caused by premature wear of the rocker arm pivots. Two types of rocker arm pivots were used on these engines. Type 1 pivot assemblies, Fig. 19, are the only ones showing premature wear. It is therefore recommended that only Type 2 pivot assemblies, Fig. 20, be used when servicing the engine for the above mentioned condition.
1. Remove valve cover.
2. Remove flanged bolts, rocker arm pivot and rocker arms, Fig. 18.
3. When installing rocker arm assemblies, lubricate wear surfaces with suitable lubricant. Torque flanged bolts to 25 ft. lbs. On 8 cylinder engines or 28 ft. lbs. on 6 cylinder engines.
