Balance Shaft: Service and Repair

Typical Balance Shaft Components:







1. Remove engine assembly as described under ``Engine, Replace.''
2. Remove oil pan attaching bolts and the oil pan.
3. Remove balance shaft assembly attaching bolts and the balance shaft assembly, Figs. 7 and 8.
4. Reverse procedure to install. Torque short attaching bolts to 9 ft. lbs. plus an additional 75° turn and long attaching bolts to 9 ft. lbs. plus an additional 90° turn.

NOTE: Before mounting balance shaft assembly, rotate engine until cylinders 1 & 4 are at TDC.

Crankshaft Position:






5. Measure from block to closest notch in reluctor ring, it should be one and eleven sixteenth inch (1-11/16).
6. Without moving crankshaft mount balancer with counterweights parallel and away from crankshaft.
