Starting System - Updated Starter Replacement Procedure

REPLACEMENT 3.8L (NEW PROCEDURE)

The cranking motor procedure in the 1988 Service Manual has been revised. The following procedure should be used when removing or installing the cranking motor:

CRANKING MOTOR REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

1. Negative battery cable.

2. Engine side strut bolt and upper radiator panel bracket.

3. Engine side strut bracket.

4. Discharge A/C system refer to Air Conditioning (Section 1B).

5. Raise vehicle, refer to General Information (Section 0A).

6. Cooling fan lower retaining bolts and disconnect electrical connection at fan.

7. Lower vehicle.

8. Cooling fan upper.

9. 3 spark plug wires and oil indicator tube assembly.

10. Exhaust manifold flange bolts.

11. Exhaust manifold bolts and manifold.

12. A/C manifold retaining bolt from A/C compressor and remove A/C line retaining bolt.

13. Starter wiring from starter.

14. Raise vehicle, refer to General Information (Section 0A).

15. Flywheel inspection cover.

16. Starter mounting bolts and starter (shims, if used).
INSTALL OR CONNECT

1. Shims, starter and mounting bolts - Tighten bolts to 40 N-m (30 lb.ft.)

2. Flywheel inspection cover.

3. Wiring to starter.

4. A/C manifold bolt and A/C line bracket bolt.

5. Lower vehicle.

6. Exhaust manifold.

7. Exhaust manifold flange bolts.

8. Oil indicator tube assembly and connect spark plug wires.

9. Cooling fan assembly, install upper retaining bolts.

10. Raise vehicle, refer to General Information (Section 0A).

11. Connect electrical connections to fan, cooling fan lower retaining bolts.

12. Lower vehicle.

13. Engine side strut bracket.

14. Upper radiator panel bracket, strut and bracket bolts.

15. Connect negative battery cable.

16. Evacuate and charge A/C, refer to Air Conditioning (Section 1B).
