Computers and Control Systems: Description and Operation

Fig. 1 Computer Command Control (C-3) System Operation Full Function System:

Computer Command Control (C-3) is an electronically controlled emission and fuel control system used with carbureted engines. The C-3 system uses an Electronic Control Module (ECM) to monitor engine and vehicle operating conditions in order to control systems affecting engine performance.
The full function system, Fig. 1, operates different control systems, depending upon application, including: fuel control and air management systems, ignition timing, Idle Speed Control (ISC), Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), Early Fuel Evaporation (EFE), Evaporative Emission Control (EEC) and Transmission Converter Clutch (TCC).
The system has a back-up program which allows near normal vehicle operation in case of a system malfunction, and a ``Check Engine'' or ``Service Engine Soon'' lamp on the instrument panel to alert the operator to malfunctions. This same lamp, operating through an internal diagnostic circuit, allows many system malfunctions to be diagnosed and located for repair.
